The development and availability of antibody-based compounds for targeted cancer detection is enabling new strategies to visualize tumors and or tumor margins during intra-operative surgery. In this PhD research project in the chairs of Optical Sciences and Medical Cell BioPhysics at the University of Twente and in close collaboration with the group of Prof. L. de Vries (MD, PhD) from the University Medical Center of Groningen, we will explore optical molecular imaging techniques, such as fluorescence -, Raman – and coherent Raman spectroscopy and imaging, for quantitative receptor analysis for instance of key kinase proteins in cancer development. Advanced optical microscopes and specialized optical fiber probe development will be part of the project. Quantitative evaluation of specific optical signals in vitro, and ultimately in vivo, will enable to investigate the effect of small ligand inhibitors in their effect on size, composition and heterogeneity of tumor tissue.
